The Geekvape Aegis – The Most Thoroughly Over-Tested Device On The MarketÂ
By Jonathan Yu
The original Geekvape Aegis was released on a wave of hype following its announcement. Not surprising, given that its intriguing design and noteworthy features definitely stood out among the typical, plastic, rectangular mods. Geekvape appears to have gone all out with the marketing concept of focusing on a product’s “unique selling point”–not a bad idea given the exponentially growing number of vape mods on the market today. Â
Â
At a glance, it’s not difficult to identify the intended niche of the Geekvape Aegis. As the name suggests, the Aegis is meant for heavy duty use in harsh environments. The Aegis boasts a military grade rating 810G-516.6 for resistance to shock and a IP rating of IP67 for resistance to dust and water to back those marketing claims.
Â
Thankfully, Geekvape put in some much appreciated effort to prevent the Aegis from sharing a resemblance to other “tough”, “rugged”, “defender” products in the genre.Â
Â
There are two major features that will probably grab most people’s attention–the firing button on the front and the rounded grip on the back. Â
Â
I have to say, I was a little disappointed that the firing button functioned in a completely normal fashion–I was really hoping that it would pivot in the middle of the button, like a rocker switch, given the similarity in appearance.  But the shape actually does improve the ease of use, so that’s not something I’d really offer as valid criticism (although perhaps it’d do as a suggestion to Geekvape’s future incarnations). Â
Â
At least the grip on the backside is as wonderful as it looks, and it comes in several varieties. I ordered the very handsome option with black leather with red threading (from EightVape! Highly recommended when ordering hardware by the way, unless you don’t mind crossing your fingers for months while your device slowly and haphazardly makes its way back to China in case you decide on a return or exchange). In addition to boosting the grip-ability, it certainly adds a unexpectedly luxurious feel to a very utilitarian device. More companies should take note of this design feature. Â
Â
The tactile experience of vaping with the Aegis can be easily covered in a single word: SOLID. Even with all the hype and conspicuous design choices, in hand, the glorious feeling of holding a well-crafted, bomb-proof, amalgam of metal, leather and silicon machinery, still manages to impress. Â
Â
I’ll spare you the results of my torture-testing because I didn’t do any, and because there are already hundreds online featuring the Aegis’ resilience in your typical vaping environments and scenarios (e.g. chucking it off the top of Mount Everest, drop-kicking it into an active volcano, attaching it to the exhaust of a space rocket during takeoff, etc.) So while they prove the Aegis isn’t literally invulnerable, it’s safe to say that it’s likely to survive 99.99% of any vaping-related accidents you’ll encounter. Â
Â
However, that’s actually somewhat of a downside, in a counter-intuitive way. Personally, I purchased the Aegis because of my dismal record of keeping devices safe. But I’ve since learned that most decently built devices will survive most typical accidents (excluding accidents occurring during the filming of Aegis torture tests). Which means that a lot of the extra bulk is probably unnecessary for the vast majority of vapers.  It doesn’t easily slip into the pockets of modern pants (makes you miss the ’90s, doesn’t it?), so ironically, a lot of its usage takes place at home, defeating its purpose. Â
Â
Besides all the protection-related components, the Aegis is an otherwise normal vape mod. So it doesn’t sacrifice any of the functions one would expect to find on any other multi-mode device. And it does have some unique features, including a fast firing time of 0.015 seconds and a 510-connection base capable of accomodating 30mm tanks or drippers without overhang (such as the Steam Crave Aromamizer Plus RDTA, a very excellent 30mm RDTA).
Â
So I can honestly say that the Aegis absolutely lives up to its name and hype, though it’s probably overkill for the typical vaping consumer. But if you actually do anticipate dangerous and destructive vaping situations, then the Geekvape Aegis, and its new dual-battery powered big brother, the Geekvape Aegis Legend, should be some of the first mods to consider.
